About the procedure

How will the procedure be carried out?

The treatment begins with thorough make-up removal and cleansing of the skin using specialised dermatological products. The skin must be completely free of oil, make-up and impurities so that the carbon mask can penetrate the pores as effectively as possible.

The dermatologist then applies a thin layer of carbon cream containing activated charcoal to the entire face or just to problem areas. The cream is left to dry for approximately 10–15 minutes; during this time, the activated charcoal penetrates deep into the pores and binds to impurities, excess sebum, toxins and dead skin cells. At the same time, the black carbon acts as a target for the laser beam.

Once the mask has dried, the laser treatment itself begins, using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The laser activates the carbon particles and shatters them along with the bound impurities.

This results in the mechanical cleansing of the pores. At the same time, the laser energy penetrates into deeper layers, where it stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. During the procedure, you may hear a slight crackling sound and feel a gentle warmth on your skin.

The entire procedure takes 30–60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Once the laser treatment is complete, the dermatologist applies a moisturising or regenerating mask containing hyaluronic acid to soothe the skin. The final step is the application of a moisturising protective cream.

Immediately after the treatment, the skin looks radiant and clear, and the pores are visibly tightened. Over the following days, the effect intensifies as the production of new collagen is stimulated. For maximum results, we recommend a course of 3 treatments at intervals of 2–4 weeks, depending on the specific issue being addressed.

Is a carbon peel suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes, carbon peeling is one of the gentle laser treatments suitable even for sensitive skin. Unlike chemical peels or aggressive treatments, it does not cause significant irritation or long-lasting redness.

The laser operates at a precisely calibrated energy level, which cleanses and rejuvenates without damaging healthy tissue. If you have extremely sensitive skin or dermatological conditions such as eczema or rosacea in the acute phase, please consult a dermatologist to assess whether this treatment is suitable for you.

What are the restrictions and aftercare instructions following a carbon peel?

After treatment, use SPF 50+ sun protection for at least two weeks and avoid direct sunlight. Do not use exfoliating products or retinol for the first 2–3 days.

It is also best to avoid saunas, swimming pools, solariums and intense sporting activities that cause heavy sweating for at least 2–3 days. Keep your skin well moisturised using gentle, alcohol-free and fragrance-free moisturisers. Your skin will be more sensitive to external factors following the treatment, so protection against UV radiation is essential.

How many carbon peel treatments are recommended to achieve visible results?

You will notice a visible improvement after just the first treatment. Your skin will be radiant, your pores tightened and your complexion smoothed.

For long-lasting results and to address deeper issues, we recommend a course of 3 treatments at 2-week intervals for acne treatment, or 3–4 treatments at 3–4-week intervals for the removal of pigmentation and fine lines.

Maintenance treatments are then carried out once or twice a year, depending on the condition of your skin. The exact number of sessions will be determined by a dermatologist based on your individual situation.

Are there any contraindications where a carbon peel is not suitable?

Carbon peels are not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the event of active herpes outbreaks, acute skin infections, immediately after sunbathing, or whilst taking photosensitising medication.

Other contraindications include autoimmune skin conditions in the acute phase, a history of keloid scarring, and a recent chemical peel or other ablative procedure.

If you are taking Roaccutane or other retinoids, you must wait at least 6 months after completing your course of treatment before undergoing the procedure. You will always have a consultation with a dermatologist prior to the treatment, who will assess whether the procedure is suitable for you.
